A message from Artistic Director Robert A.M. Ross

At about the same time we were planning Voces Novae et Antiquae's card-carol concert of two years ago, a fortuitous set of parallel developments took place. Architect Richard Conway Meyer had approached the Lady Chapel Singers of the Women’s Sacred Music Project (of which I am Music Director) with a set of Christmas carols composed between 1976 and 2001 by his late wife, cellist and composer Lesley Hopwood Meyer. WSMP Artistic Director Lisa Thomas looked over the set of 26 carols, selected two of them (Nunc Gaudet Maria and The Time Draws Near), and commissioned me to arrange them for treble voices and various combinations of flute, harp, and percussion. These two carols have since been recorded by the Lady Chapel Singers under my direction; the new CD, Magdalene and the Other Mary (which, incidentally, contains a number of original works, arrangements, and editions of mine besides these two) is now available from Church Publishing, Inc. In addition, Nunc Gaudet Maria has been published by Oxford University Press.

About halfway into the arranging process for these two carols, I discovered that the 26 original carols by Lesley Meyer had been conceived and executed as Christmas greeting cards! So, after the premiere in December, 2002 of the two arrangements and after meeting Richard Meyer after the concert, I asked for and received permission to arrange three more carols for Voces Novae et Antiquae. We premiered those in the January, 2004 12th Night concert, after which I was given blanket permission to arrange more of Lesley’s carols for VNA. So we will be presenting three brand new arrangements of Lesley Meyer’s card-carols, including one (At Christmas Be Merry) which has never been performed at all, even on a private, informal basis, as many of her carols had been at Christmas parties hosted by the Meyers.

MPR's web site has a feature on Abbie Burt Betinis, the third Burt family member to compose Christmas card carols. We will be performing Abbie's latest carols, Prayer for Peace, and Song of the Pines, on our Twelfth Night concert.
